War and Peace in Islam Minimize

Themes In Islamic Civilization

Instructor: Shukri B. Abed
Class Times: Tuesdays at 6-7:50p.m.

In this course students will become aquainted with major themes of the Islamic Civilization. These topics include questions of war and peace, the status of women, education, modernity, and science in Islamic history and tradition. The study will be based on primary sources in Islam such as the Qur'an and Hadith, as well as secondary sources.

The seminar will be divided into two major sections: the classical period (up to the 13th century AD) and the Modern period of Islamic history (roughly the last 200 years).

The materials used for this course will be provided by the instructor.

The Middle East Today

Through lectures, readings and discussion, students develop their understanding of the region, its social, political and economic stability within a cultural context. A primary focus of the course will be the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, its causes, actors, victims, and proposed solutions as well as the history of US policy regarding the conflict.

Materials for this class will be provided by the instructor.
