Saudi Artist Ahmed Mater - 2016 D.C. Program

The Middle East Institute (MEI) in partnership with Art Jameel is pleased to host leading Saudi artist Ahmed Mater for a series of public events highlighting his groundbreaking work in video, photography, painting, and installation offering an unparalleled perspective on contemporary Saudi Arabia.

Mater, whose first solo U.S. exhibit opens at the Freer|Sackler Gallery on March 19,  explores the narratives and aesthetics of Islamic culture in an era of globalization, consumerism, and transformation. His recent work uses image and video to explore local collective memory and unofficial histories behind Saudi Arabia's sociopolitical life.

The panel will examine the impact of Mater's art in presenting new perspectives of Saudi Arabia, as well as the role of youth culture in shaping new narratives about the Kingdom.

Artist Talk - Documenting Unofficial Histories: A Conversation with Saudi Artist Ahmed Mater

The artist talk will feature screenings of Mater's cutting edge work and discussion about his first solo U.S. exhibition, Symbolic Cities, opening at the Freer | Sackler Gallery on Saturday, March 19.

Culture Event - A Night of Art, Rap, and Pop Culture from the Arabian Peninsula
Thursday, March 24, 2016

Where: Busboys and Poets Restaurant- 14th & V St.

 

The program will feature a live performance by Kuwaiti rappers, Sons of Yusuf, screenings of Mater's videos, and a conversation with the artists about the transformational role of art in the Gulf.
