The Middle East Institute welcomes Dr. Shamsh Kassim-Lakha for a timely discussion on development in Pakistan. Dr. Lakha, a veteran government and education policymaker, will discuss issues faced by policymakers charged with fostering economic development in Pakistan. Dr. Lakha will also share his views of the economic, political, cultural and religious factors that affect public and private sector policymaking, and how these can be leveraged to produce positive change for the lives of the people in Pakistan. Keeping in view challenges unique to Pakistan, Dr. Lakha will comment on the country’s most pressing development needs today.

Bio: Dr. Shamsh Kassim-Lakha is the Chairman of the Pakistan Center for Philanthropy and a consultant for the Grameen Health Initiative. In 2007-08, he was Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Education, Science and Technology and served on the boards of Higher Education Commission and the National Commission for Government Reform in 2006. Dr. Lakha was the Minister of State and Chairman of the Steering Committee on Higher Education in 2001. Having spent 27 years as the president of the Aga Khan University, Pakistan’s top medical school and the first private university in South Asia, Mr. Lakha was appointed as co-chair for the establishment of the University of Central Asia, by the President of Tajikistan and His Highness the Aga Khan, in 1996.

Dr. Lakha has received a number of awards, including the Sitara-i-Imtiaz (1998), and the Hilal-i-Imtiaz from the President of Pakistan (2002); as well as the award of Officer in the French National Order of Merit from President Jacques Chirac of France, in recognition of his “tireless and fruitful contribution in the service of Pakistan and in the field of education”.
