About the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center Minimize

In Washington, DC

The Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center (SQCC), named for His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said al Said of Oman, was established in 2005 to provide educational resources and outreach programs that aim to build greater public understanding and awareness between the US, Oman and the nations of the Gulf Region. Building on more than 200 years of positive relations between the United States and the Sultanate, SQCC celebrates the culture, history and heritage of these regions.

Through cultural and educational programs, the Center strives to bring the rich and diverse history and the dynamic present of Oman to audiences in Washington, DC, and across the nation. Forums have included the World Bank, the Smithsonian Institution, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Middle East Institute, the Omani Embassy in Washington, DC, and private and public universities throughout the US.  Through the power of the Internet, we offer educational resources for teachers and students from kindergarten to the university level, libraries and museums with relevant collections, and a rich source of information on the Sultanate of Oman.

Specific highlights of SQCC outreach include: development of an interactive website covering the history of human interaction on the Indian Ocean (The Indian Ocean in World History); partnering with the Kennedy Center on "OMAN...O Man!," a dance/theater production created, directed and choreographed by Debbie Allen; partnering with the Smithsonian Institution’s Freer and Sackler Galleries on their largest exhibition to date, “Encompassing the Globe,” and participation in “ImaginAsia” Open Houses; an Omani Speakers’ Tour to five US universities on subjects such as women’s empowerment; calligraphy workshops; participation in the Model Arab League Conference; lectures on the evolution of Muscat, the Natural Remedies of Arabia and the Craft Heritage of Oman; and more.

H.E. Hunaina S. Al-Mughairy, Ambassador of Oman to the United States, serves as Chair of the SQCC Board of Oversight. Ambassador Elizabeth McKune serves as Executive Director and heads the office in Washington, DC. Funded by the Government of the Sultanate of Oman and individual contributions, the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center is a program of the Middle East Institute.
