  • Former Afghanistan and Pakistan Analyst at the Bureau of Intelligence Research at the US Department of State (1999-2003)
  • Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois; served as Director of the Program in South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies
  • Senior Fellow at the United States Institute of Peace (1996-1997); held Fulbright Research Fellowships for Afghanistan (1989-90) and Egypt (1981-1982)
  • He has  authored numerous books, chapters and articles.  Some of his more recent publications include “Hard Choices in Countering Insurgency and Terrorism in Pakistan’s Northwest Frontier,” in the Journal of International Affairs, November 2009;  “The Intertwined Destinies of Afghanistan and Pakistan” with Haseeb Humayoon in Alexander Thier (ed.), The Future of Afghanistan, U.S. Institute of Peace Press, Washington DC, (February 2009), pp. 93-103; and“Lost Faith, Forfeited Trust: Afghan Responses to Post-9/11 Intervention in State Building and Insurgency,” in International Interventions in Local Conflict: Crisis Management and Conflict Resolution Since the Cold War, Uzi Rabi (ed.), I.B. Taurus, London, forthcoming in early 2010.
