The creation in the early 1970s of a loose federation of seven independent states – Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Al Fujayrah, Ra’s al Khaymah, Ash Shariqah, and Umm al Qaywayn – followed the withdrawal of British forces and the end of imperial treaties. Formerly known as the Trucial States, these city-states now comprise the United Arab Emirates. Under the protection of the British this area began to develop after the discovery of oil that brought rapid growth and modernization. Nomadic pastoralism and commercial activity has been occurring in the area of the modern UAE since the beginnings of the third millennium BC. The civilizations of Mesopotamia and the various Iranian empires were influences. The native population of the nation is Arab. However, three quarters of the inhabitants of the country are non-natives. While the largest number of expatriates is Asian, there are also substantial numbers of other Arabs and Europeans. This diversity, combined with the influence of different tribes in each emirate, create a unique blend of tradition and modern elements in Emirati culture and society. The UAE appears ultra-modern in many respects and is becoming part of a global economy and culture. However, the reliance on Islam and traditional, tribal society are the base for a stable and conservative social structure.
