Tuition and Registration Policies
Please note: A late fee of $25 will be attached to tuition of any course registered for after July 1, 2008.

Tuition for most classes, which meet twice a week, is $395. Classes that meet one day a week are $245, and intensive courses are $960. Please note that these policies do not apply to Special Intensive Courses.

Registration Fees & MEI Membership
An registration fee of $35 is required for every term in which you register for a class. Effective May 15, 2008, MEI no longer offers registration discounts for MEI members, though we will honor our prior policies for members who we remain eligible under those prior policies.

Withdrawal and Refund policies

Any student may withdraw from a language or regional studies class at any time. A student, however, is entitled to a refund only under the following conditions:

  • A student withdrawals no later than the end of the 2nd week of classes (please see academic calendar)
    AND
  • A student submits his/her withdrawal in written form
    OR
  • MEI must cancel the class

A refund or rollover will then be given according to the following schedule:

In the event that MEI must cancel the class, all tuition, including the $35 registration fee, and the processing fee will be refunded.

If a student withdraws before the start of the quarter s/he will be refunded 100% the amount minus all non–refundable items as listed below.

Non-refundable fees and costs include:
a) $35 quarterly registration fee
b) $35 class processing fee for regional studies classes
c) $70 class processing fee for non-intensive classes
d) $140 class processing fee for intensive classes
e) Costs of books, tapes, CDs, DVDs and any other supplemental materials
f) Costs of extra-curricular events and activities
g) $45.00 and $55.00 rollover fees
h) $25 Late Registration fee (applied to tuition)

Note: Student will retain all purchased texts and supplemental materials as well as Middle East Institute membership.

If a student withdraws any time after the beginning of classes* but no later than the end of the 2nd week of classes, the non-refundable fee and costs will be subtracted from the total paid. The balance of the funds will be prorated on a weekly basis:

  • 87.5% of the balance will be refunded if withdrawal request is received in writing during the 1st week of classes

  • 75% of the balance will be refunded if withdrawal request is received in writing during the 2nd week of classes

The prorated refund is based on the tuition cost minus the non-refundable fees.

Tuition Withdrawal Prior to Start of Quarter Withdrawal Within First Week Withdrawal Within Second Week
$245 $210 $183.75 $123.75
$395 $325 $284.38 $243.75

*Please note: The terms: "classes start", "start of classes", "beginning of classes", "start of Quarter" and all similar statements made in our policies refer to the first day of the quarter and not necessarily the first day that a student expects to/can/does attend their class that quarter. This means that any request to drop a class before the first day of classes needs to be received before (as in the day before at the latest) the first day the quarter begins in general and not when the student's first day starts. If a student submits a request to withdraw before 6pm on the first day of the classes, it is still considered to have been received during the first week and after the start of the session. Thus, even though classes have not begun at 4 or 5 pm on the day classes are scheduled to begin, all preparations for it have been made and students have been turned away if there are no spaces in a particular class. Thus, the student who requests to drop a class at 4 pm or even at 7 am on the day classes are to begin for the quarter does not meet the deadline for "before classes start" as by this is meant "before the first day of classes."

Example: A student has just joined MEI and has paid tuition for the EMSA I class ($395), an Registration Fee ($35), an Arabic textbook ($55), and ten audio CDs ($35). The total amount s/he would have paid is: $585.00. If the student withdraws after the beginning of classes but before the end of the second week of classes, the total refund for this student will be $243.75.

No refunds or rollovers will be issued on withdrawals requested after the end of the second week of classes.

A confirmation e-mail will be sent upon request to withdraw. If you have not received confirmation, please call (202) 785-2710 or send an e-mail to languages@mei.edu

Refunds will be made by check if payment was made either by check or cash. Refunds will be made by credit card if payment was made by credit card and only to the card that was used to make the payment. For refunds to be made to another credit card, a signed authorization needs to be received from the cardholder in person or via fax or mail.

Please allow 45 days for refunds to be processed and issued.

Rollover Option

A student may opt for a rollover rather than a refund. As with a refund, no rollovers can be made for requests received after the second week of classes. Rollover requests are subject to approval. Each time a rollover is requested and approved the student must pay the $45 rollover fee if withdrawing within the first week and $55 if withdrawing within the second week of the term.

To request a rollover or a refund, please send an e-mail including your name, phone number and reason for withdrawal to languages@mei.edu

If a student requests to roll over his/her tuition for the second time in a row, s/he will pay the rollover fee and be credited a percentage of the $395.00 tuition according to the following schedule:

  • Rollover within the first week: Credit of tuition less the $70 processing fee = $325.00 for regular courses and $210 for regional studies classes.

  • Rollover within the second week Credit of 87.5% of (tuition less $70 processing fee) = $284.38 for regular courses and $183.75 for regional studies classes.

Auditing a Course
The Middle East Institute does not permit audits because students who choose this option tend to fall behind, putting undue pressure on the teacher and their fellow students.
