Consultancy Summary

The Middle East Institute (MEI) is seeking to hire a consultant to serve as an Arabic language editor responsible for translating select MEI English-language content into Arabic for distribution via social media. The consultant will also work with MEI to  launch and grow an Arabic-language Twitter handle for distribution of MEI’s Arabic language content. 

Responsibilities include translating into Arabic a weekly policy paper, producing original tweets in Arabic, adapting English-language tweets for an Arabic twitter feed and live tweeting content from MEI’s English-language policy panels into Arabic. The candidate will manage the MEI Arabic language Twitter feed, including implementing an editorial calendar, managing/scheduling tweets, and advise on marketing and growth of the feed. 

The candidate will be supervised by MEI”s communications team, based in Washington, DC and will work in close consultation with them to provide Arabic-language content for the MEI Arabic language Twitter handle, as well as to build and market the handle to audiences in the Middle East. 

The  candidate must have professional experience writing and publishing in Arabic; translating English content into Arabic; be an active social media user, and adept at working with Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.   Familiarity with other digital media skills like basic video and audio editing is a plus. The candidate can work remotely, but should be available to work Washington, DC hours in the event of live tweeting (9am-3pm east coast time).

The candidate must be willing to commit 20 hours a week. Approximately half of his/her time will be focused on translating content and the other half will be dedicated to developing MEI’s Arabic Twitter handle.


  • At least five years of professional experience writing in modern standard Arabic as a journalist, editor, academic, etc. 
  • Experience doing English to Arabic translation 
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or related degree
  • Experience with social media and working with Twitter in Arabic 
  • Demonstrated experience in storytelling through new media, including some video/audio production experience
  • Familiarity with Middle East policy issues

Salary commensurate with experience.
