Zoltan Barany is Frank C. Erwin, Jr. Centennial Professor of Government at the University of Texas.  He is the author of Armies of Arabia: Military Politics and Effectiveness in the Gulf  (Oxford, 2021), How Armies Respond to Revolutions and Why (Princeton, 2016), and The Soldier and the Changing State: Building Democratic Armies in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas (Princeton, 2012) – all have been translated into Arabic.  His current research focuses on states without militaries and the constitutional regulation of the armed forces.
