Amb. Yael LempertWashington, DC, September 2, 2025 — The Middle East Institute (MEI) is proud to announce the appointment of Ambassador (ret.) Yael Lempert as its new Vice President for Outreach, effective September 2, 2025. In this role, Ambassador Lempert will lead MEI’s government relations and strategic engagement efforts, advancing the Institute’s mission to deepen understanding of the Middle East and strengthen policy dialogue between the region and the United States.

“Ambassador Lempert brings extraordinary diplomatic experience, deep regional expertise, and a lifelong commitment to public service,” said Ambassador (ret.) Stu Jones, President of MEI. “Her leadership will be instrumental in strengthening MEI’s relationships with policymakers and international partners at a time of significant global challenges. We are thrilled to welcome her to the Institute.”

Ambassador Lempert is a distinguished career diplomat with over 27 years of experience in US foreign policy under five presidential administrations, including extensive service across the Middle East and North Africa. Most recently, she served as the US Ambassador to Jordan from 2023 to early 2025, building on a long record of senior roles at the State Department and the White House.

Her previous positions include Acting Assistant Secretary of State and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs, as well as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Egypt and North Africa.  Ambassador Lempert served on the National Security Council staff of three Presidents, including as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for the Levant, Israel, and Egypt from 2014 to 2017. Other assignments included key diplomatic roles in London, Jerusalem, Tripoli, Cairo, Baghdad, and Shanghai.

Ambassador Lempert holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. She has been presented with numerous awards for her public service, including twice receiving the US government-wide Presidential Rank Award, and the National Security Council’s Outstanding Service Award.
