Mr. Arvanitis joined the IMF in 1994 and is Deputy Director of the Middle East and Central Asia Department (MCD). He has extensive policy and operational experience at the IMF and currently oversees the work on several countries in the region, including Armenia, Jordan, Lebanon, Pakistan, Somalia, and the UAE. Prior to his current assignment, he was Deputy Director of the European Department overseeing the work on Eastern European countries. Before that, he was in charge of the Emerging Markets division in the Strategy, Policy and Review Department where he was involved in the design of the IMF’s lending policies and the monitoring of IMF-supported programs. Thanos was born in Athens, Greece, and studied economics at the Athens School of Economics and University of Rochester where he received his Ph.D. in 1994.
