Richard F. Strand has researched and written on the languages and societies of Nuristân and adjacent areas since 1967, and his fluency in those languages has provided him with a rare inside view of tribal politics in eastern Afghanistan. From 2002-2005 Strand served as director of a major agricultural NGO in Nangarhâr Province; today he is a member of the consulting firm Ethnographic Associates, LLC, specializing in area training and analysis for the Afghanistan-Pakistan region.
