The director of the Middle East Institute’s (MEI) Iran Program Alex Vatanka will be discussing his most recent book “The Battle of the Ayatollahs in Iran: The United States, Foreign Policy and Political Rivalries since 1979.” The discussion will revolve around the lessons of history from the last 42 years of Iranian-American relations, addressing specifically:

Is there any prospect for a dialogue between the new hardline President Ebrahim Raisi of Iran and the Joe Biden administration? What is the role of factional politics in Tehran in shaping Iran’s attitude toward the United States? Above all, what would it take for Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to accept that some US-Iran cooperation in the turmoil of the Middle East might be mutually advantageous?
