Kaoru Sugihara is Professor of Economic History  at  the  Center  for Southeast  Asian  Studies,  Kyoto  University, and  is  currently  President  of  the  Japan  Society  of Socio-economic History.  His  English-language  publications include  Japan  in  the Contemporary  Middle East, co-edited with J. A. Allan (Routledge, 1993) and  Editor, Japan,  China  and  the  Growth  of the Asian International Economy,  1850-1949 (Oxford  University Press, 2005).
