Judith Cochran visited refugee camps throughout the Middle East to research her most recent book on the Middle East, Democracy in the Middle East: The Impact of Religion and Education. She has been a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Arizona and at the University of Texas. She had a Fulbright Senior Lectureship in Egypt and taught at Ain Shams University and directed the English Language Program for DPS at American University in Cairo; she was awarded a second Fulbright to Turkey. With the assistance of Egyptian graduate students, she surveyed the universities in Egypt for the Ministry of Education in order to develop and enhance teacher education programs. Subsequent publications on the Middle East include Educational Roots of Political Crisis in Egypt, Education in Egypt, and numerous book chapters and articles on education and women in the Middle East. Dr. Cochran holds the E. Desmond Lee Endowed Chair of Tutorial Education at the University of Missouri, St. Louis where she directs universities that provide academic and social support for underserved urban children in St. Louis.
